Planet Trist is one of several planets across the Universe that have people living on it. The difference with this planet is that there is only one primary emotion that is felt: Sadness. They have never explored feeling another emotion, or other powers.
What would happen if someone from another planet that's ruled by a different emotion arrives and offers a way to feel something else - will they survive it? Will the planet?
